Mazzoni Bibaum®

Mazzoni’s Bibaum® was the main focus during the second afternoon of the annual seminar on apple growing, held from January 15 to 17, 2013, in Bonn, Germany.

BIBAUM® – THE BASIS FOR MODERN APPLE PRODUCTION’
Under the heading of ‘Bibaum® – The basis for a modern apple production’, Alberto Dorigoni of the San Michele all’Adige Research Centre, known as an expert on an international level, opened the sections dedicated to mechanization, highlighting the fruit wall of Bibaum®. Dorigoni then pointed out the main advantages of the Bibaum® system.

MAIN OBJECTIVES AND ADVANTAGES OF THE BIBAUM® SYSTEM:

  • Reduction of plant vigour.

Uniform formation of branches to enable mechanization.Simplification of growing practices.Formation of a fruit wall.

Bibaum® also aims at SUSTAINABILITY – Economic and Ecological!

Dorigoni concluded his presentation by emphasizing that Bibaum® is an innovative and decisive element for future production strategies and techniques in apple growing, one that enables a significant reduction in labour times and plant protection products.

FOCUS ON THE TECHNIQUES FOR NURSERY PRODUCTION OF TWIN LEADER TREES
Manfred Varesco and Bettina Riedel of the company Vivai Mazzoni then spoke about the techniques for producing twin leader trees in the nursery.
Many years of research and experience led to the right technique for nursery production of these bi-axis trees. The biggest challenges were make a balanced and homogeneous development of the two leaders ossible while at the same time ensuring a sufficient height of trees with short branches. These factors represent the quality criteria for twin leader trees.

QUALITY CRITERIA FOR THE MAZZONI BIBAUM® TREE:

  • At the time of purchase, the twin leader tree is completely formed and ready to be planted in the orchard. It does not require any further formation in the orchard.
  • The tree must be homogeneous = the two leaders are balanced and symmetrical.
  • The two leaders of a Bibaum® tree are spur bearing and therefore have short branches already differentiated to form blossoms.
  • The plant is balanced. The high number of flowering buds controls vigour.

Another point of interest is the price of Bibaum®. The tree costs about 25% more than a standard tree due to the higher nursery production costs. It should however be taken into consideration that fewer trees are required per linear metre, so the costs per hectare are balanced.

At present Vivai Mazzoni produces 60% of its trees as Bibaum® twin leader trees.

The system for the nursery production of twin leader trees is protected by patent. Bibaum® Mazzoni is a registered trademark

Bibaum® is by now present throughout Europe. Some of our main markets are: Italy ▪ France ▪ Spain ▪ Morocco ▪ England ▪ Slovakia ▪ Slovenia ▪ Greece ▪ Croatia ▪ Belgium ▪ Germany ▪ Austria ▪ Poland.
